The works of Elizabeth Jolley are usually inundated with mysterious plots. The behavior of her characters has always been abnormal. This paper upheld that the dualism was a key factor to understand the abnormal behavior that her characters conducted. This essay employed the gender performativity to analyze the dualism of the character by the example of Hester Harper in The Well to disclose the reasons why Hester had been treated as a marginal subject.Furthermore,it conveyed the solicitude of Elizabeth Jolley herself once as the Other to the marginalized.
