摘　　要：美国汉学家胡志德(Theodore Huters)曾研究过中国近现代思想史,他在“西学中用”为核心的思想史研究视野下对清末民初通俗小说进行了详尽的考察。文章以胡志德的通俗文学研究为主要考察对象,分析其研究方法的整体特色,同时梳理了胡志德对于清末民初纯文学与通俗文学意义区分的历史过程,并以胡志德的《歇浦潮》研究为例,具体探讨了其通过文本细读考察社会思想的研究方法。American sinologist Theodore Huters has studied the history of modern Chinese thought.He made a detailed study of popular novels in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China from the perspective of ideological research focusing on“the Western knowledge used in China”.This paper takes Theodore Huters’s popular literature research as the main study object,analyzes the overall characteristics of his research methods,and combs the historical process of the distinction between pure literature and popular literature at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,and takes Theodore Huters’s The Shanghai Tide as an example to explore his research methods of social thoughts through intensive studies.
