In the fourth year of the Yuanding reign (113 BC),Emperor Wu of the Han restricted minting to central authorities.Three Offices of Shanglin were set to take charge of the minting of wuzhu coinage. From then on,all legal coinage circulated during the Western Han was issued by the Three Offices of Shanglin.Due to a lack of detailed textual records, there has been a long debate about the nature and location of the Three Offices of Shanglin. At the end of the 20th century, the nature of the Three Offices of Shanglin had been resolved with the help of seal clays. However, the location of the Three Offices of Shanglin is still open to debate. At the beginning of this century, the discovery of a government mint site at Zhaolun in Hu County,Shaanxi, provided a promising clue for the location of the Three Offices of Shanglin.Through analysis of four Western Han mint sites in the Han Chang’an area and unearthed casting molds, this study proposes a new interpretation:that the Xiangjiaxiang site was not the mint site for liujiu (Six Imperial Stables),but the new mint site for the qiaoguan (Office of Artisans) from the first year of the Taichu reign.Coin molds and models with matching inscriptions unearthed from Gaodibao and Xiangjiaxiang are from the same period. Both represent the mint site for the Office of Artisans.Building upon that data, the Wotouzhai site was likely the mint site for the Six Imperial Stables.
