摘 要:康拉德的《间谍》被广泛视为最早的一部"9·11小说",但它与新世纪反恐话语的关联并非那么简单。19世纪末,欧洲出现的无政府恐怖主义暴力有其复杂的历史语境,康拉德对无政府主义者及其"行动宣传"暴力的书写,不仅仅指向了无政府主义运动背后隐秘运作的人性之恶,而且代表了这位波兰外来者对英国及欧洲大陆当时反恐政治的矛盾态度。只有重返《间谍》这个反讽文本的历史构建现场,我们才能更准确把握那个时期的康拉德与新兴的全球帝国之间的暧昧关系,由此提炼并重申他20世纪初期的政治小说对于当代的现实意义。Today,Conrad’s The Secret Agent has been widely invoked as the first"9/11 novel",but its parallel to the 21st-century counter-terrorism discourse is not unproblematic.The European anarchist terrorism surge in the late 19th century was embedded in its complicated historical context,and Conrad’s portrayal of these anarchists and its"propaganda of the deed"violence not only points to human evil stealthily operating behind the Anarchist movement,but also reveals this Polish-English writer’s ambivalent attitude to the 19th-century counter-terrorism campaigns in Great Britain and the Continent.This article argues that only by returning to the historical contexts of The Secret Agent conceived as an ironic text can we more congenially detect Conrad’s ambiguous relationship with the emergent global Empire,and corroborate his political fiction’s uncanny relevance to our age.
