摘　　要：美国南方作家托马斯·沃尔夫在传记体小说《网与石》中借助嗅觉景观书写表现了主人公对南方的复杂情感。作为现代主义创作的代表作家,沃尔夫在塑造去异地求学或工作的新一代南方人时,着眼于传达其对现代性身份的反思及对生命本体意识的追寻,从而使其南方书写兼具现代性审美特质。此外,沃尔夫在揭示社会转型期南方人现代性体验时,还表达了对民族身份的思考,并在作品中呈现了南方地域身份、现代都市身份、美国民族身份等多重身份追寻的复杂主题。Thomas Wolfe in his biographical novel, The Web and the Rock presents the main character’s complicated passion for the American south through smellscape writing. Wolfe focuses on the reflection of new southerners working or studying in a place far away from the South on a modern identity and ontological pursuit of life, rendering his southern novel with aesthetic features of modern work. Additionally, Wolfe also manifests his understanding of ethnic identity while unveiling southerners’ engagement in modern South, and more importantly, reveals the themes of finding out the southern regional identity, modern municipal identity and American ethnic identity.
