摘　　要：在伊迪丝·华顿的《国家风俗》中,主人公对物的收集反映的是其对缺失的自我身份的物质化过程。一方面,纽约的新贵们过度关注物的功能性,实质是对出身和真实性的渴求;另一方面,曾经的贵族对古物的珍视本身体现了他们对自身所处现实的一种无可奈何:血统、出身和爵位在小说中描绘的纽约已然失去了它们的意识形态价值。人所缺乏的,总会被投注到物品身上。在这个新颖与过时、永恒与瞬息并存的新时空压缩体中,小说中主人公所遭遇的是文化身份和归属感的缺失。他们对主体身份和稳定性的执着追求必然不可避免地以重回弥漫在现代性历史中的虚无主义而告终。In Edith Wharton's The Custom of the Country(1913),both the hero and the heroine's collection of"objects"is actually the materialization process of their own missing elements.On the one hand,the new riches'excessive attention to the function of"objects"is their desire for origin and authenticity,while the old aristocrats'unswerving stick to the family relics also reveal their sense of resignation to the reality:blood,birth and titles have lost their ideological value in the"New York"depicted in the novel.What people lack will always be invested in things.Both Undine and Ralph suffer from the loss of cultural identity and the sense of belonging in such a newly compressed temporality,in which novelty and obsolescence,permanence and evanescence,seem simultaneous.Their persistent pursuit of subjective identity and stability will inevitably end up reverting to the nihilism that permeates the history of modernity.
