With the increasing engine power, more and more stringent requirements are put forward on the design of the charge air cooler to improve the dynamic performance and economic index of the diesel engine. This paper compares and studies the influence of water-cooled intercooler and air-cooled intercooler on the working characteristics of a loader diesel engine through field tests. It found that the water-cooled charge air cooler can more effectively reduce the intake air temperature than the traditional air-cooled charge air cooler. And the air temperature has a great influence on the performance of turbocharged diesel engine power.Under loading and high-speed running conditions, the average charge air temperatures of the water-cooled charge air cooler are 27.6%and 10.5%lower than that of the air-cooled charge air cooler, respectively. The diesel engine torques are increased by 1.6%and 6.3%,and fuel consumptions are reduced by 4.0%and 2.5%.The relative air pressure also influences the fuel consumption of the diesel engine, and a suitable increment of the inlet pressure can reduce fuel consumption.
