On the eve of the Second Japanese Invasion of Joseon Dynasty in 1597,Konishi Yukinaga(小西行长),a Japanese general sent a letter to Shen Wei-jing(沈惟敬),the chief diplomatic representative of Ming Dynasty, asking him to protect Kim Euong-seo(金应瑞),a Korean general, from being killed in the war to come. Before the letter was sent,Konishi Yukinaga also leaked the Japanese military plan to Kim Euong-seo,and suggested Kim Euong-seo to take preparation on the Korean coast to avoid the eventual outbreak of the war.Later,Kim Euong-seo revealed Korean military precautions to Konishi Yukinaga to threaten the Japanese army, which made him a suspect of traitor in Korea. When the war eventually broke out,Kim Euong-seo ran away from the battlefield that made him to be considered disloyal to his country.Nevertheless, the King of Joseon unexpectedly protected him.Behind Konishi Yukinaga’s letter and activities, there was an unusual diplomatic story between Japan and Korea in the sixteenth century.
