摘 要:《罗马热病》传达了美国作家伊迪斯·沃顿对20世纪前期女性问题的关切。身体作为主体建构的重要维度,彰显着女性不同时期主体性质的差异和嬗变。小说中女性身体既受困又抵抗的姿态彰显出女性主体的矛盾特征;最终子辈以身体自由为表征方式突破囚禁,既暗示了母辈主体身份的不稳定,又预示着母辈追随子辈重建母女关系和主体身份的可能。通过展现主体的自我建构过程,沃顿似乎有意将20世纪女性的主体身份置于无尽延宕且向不稳定性敞开的漂浮状态。Roman Fever conveys Edith Wharton’s concern on women’s issues in the early 20th century.As a critical dimension of identity construction,body manifests the difference and evolution of female subjectivity during different periods.The female body in the novel is both trapped and resistant,which shows the contradictions of the female subject.Eventually,daughters’breaking away from the body imprisonment indicates not only the mothers’instability,but also their possibility of rebuilding the mother-daughter relationship and their own subject identity.By showing the self-construction process of the subject,Wharton deliberately suspends the female subject identity of the 20th century in a floating state of endless delay and open-ended instability.
