摘　　要：本文通过对美国汉学家、哈佛大学教授贾德纳(1900—1966)的学术生涯与布朗大学中文图书馆藏发展的回顾,论述北美研究型东亚图书馆在中国研究学科发展中的关键作用。首先简述贾德纳与中国结缘的一生,特别是他在20世纪20、30年代两次赴华访学的经历和收获。然后介绍贾德纳作为美国汉学研究的先驱的学问、成就和影响。进而通过近年来发现的文献和实物,评赞贾德纳先生的高尚品行风范和他与中国学者之间跨越太平洋的友好情谊。并以东亚图书馆的跨世纪发展的实践,强调贾德纳对美国中国研究和大学中文图书馆建设的深刻见解、真诚愿景及前瞻意义。还叙述贾德纳最后的奉献——捐赠图书善本给布朗大学图书馆的始末及珍藏价值。进而揭示在国际上中国研究蓬勃兴起的今天,贾德纳先生历史地位及其中文典藏的重要意义。American Sinologist Charles S.Gardner(1900-1966)was a former professor at Harvard University.This paper,through reviewing Prof.Gardner's scholarly career and the development of Chinese collections at Brown University in retrospect,discusses the key role research East Asian libraries in the North American universities have played for the progress in the Chinese studies field.It first sketches the Gardner’s lifetime linked to China,especially his two fruitful scholarly journeys to Beijing in the 20's and 30’s of the 20th Century.It then introduces to Gardner as a pioneer of American Sinology and his scholarship,achievements,and influence.Next,by means of examining archival documents and objects recently discovered,it commends Gardner for his lofty moral and demeanor as well as the friendship across the Pacific Ocean between Gardner and Chinese scholars.Through briefly reviewing the cross-century development of East Asian collections,it highlights Gardner’s insightful idea and vision on Chinese studies and Chinese libraries in the United States and their prospective significance.It also recounts the last contribution of Gardner-donating his entire personal library including rare books,to Brown University,with the event and the precious value of this collection.Furthermore,the conclusion summarizes that,seeing today’s thriving Chinese studies field,the historical importance of Prof.Gardner and his Chinese collections.
