北洋大学堂总办王修植生平思想述略  

A Brief Account of Wang Xiuzhi’s Life and Thoughts

摘　　要：王修植是中国近代社会转型时期的重要历史人物,曾于1896年至1901年出任中国近代史上的第一所大学——北洋大学堂头等学堂总办,期间与严复在天津创办《国闻报》。考察其生平思想,有助于了解我国近代化和早期高等教育的发展状况。由于史料匮乏、分散,相关资料多呈碎片化,且有不少讹误之处,故本文在搜集整理相关史料的基础上,系统地梳理了王修植的生平事迹,并对其变革思想和教育思想进行了探析。Wang Xiuzhi was an important historical figure in the transformation of modern Chinese society,acting as the executive officer of Beiyang Academy(the predecessor of Tianjin University)from 1896 to 1901,which was one of the first universities in modern Chinese history.During this period,he co-founded with Yan Fu a newspaper named“Guo Wen”in Tianjin.Examination of his life and thoughts contributes to the understanding of the development of modernization and early higher education in China.Due to the scarcity and fragmentation of historical materials,most of the materials on Wang Xiuzhi recorded by the scholars are fragmented and even contain many errors.In view of this,this paper not only systematically combs through Wang Xiuzhi’s life experience based on the collection of relevant historical materials but analyzes his thoughts on reform and education as well.
