The capnography has been mainly used in the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care. With the development of technology, parameters were derived,so that it is no longer limited to the intensive care, but used in respiratory diseases as a pulmonary function test method. The capnography is a simple and noninvasive technique, which requires relatively little coordination from patients. The correlation between the capnography parameters and pulmonary function parameters suggests that capnography can play a role in screening and diagnosing respiratory diseases, assessing the severity of the diseases, and evaluating therapeutic effects.Capnography combined with blood gas analysis can also be used as a primary screening tool for pulmonary embolism. This review summarizes the measuring methods of exhaled carbon dioxide, characteristics and the derived parameters of the capnography. The clinical application, advantages and disadvantages of capnography as a pulmonary function test in respiratory diseases are also discussed in this review.
