Erectile dysfunction(ED) is a sexual disorder defined as the inability to initiate or maintain an erection that is satisfactory for sexual intercourse. Cavernous nerve injury(CNI) is a common cause of ED, but the curative effect of first-line and second-line therapy on ED caused by CNI is not ideal. Stem cells are widely used to treat nerve injury because of their self-renewal, multi-directional differentiation and unlimited proliferation. With the rapid development of stem cell therapy technology, it is possible to apply it to the treatment of ED. This review will focus on the characteristics and mechanisms of different stem cells, explore the basic and clinical research status of stem cells in the treatment of CNI ED, and summarize the effectiveness, advantages and safety of stem cell therapy.
