The proper interpretation of Qoheleth 12:2-6 has been long debated.Earlier interpretations took these verses as an allegory about the woes of old age.Modern critical biblical scholars differ in their interpretations.Qoheleth 12:2-6 has been interpreted as a rainstorm,a dark and wet winter's day,a funeral,a depiction of the end of the world, and as a house or an estate falling into disrepair. The aim of the paper is to offer a cross-textual reading of the passage in a Chinese context, where the image of a ruined house/garden represents the sorrow of literati during the Ming-Qing transition, literati who saw in the the downfall of the Ming their own fate.Through a cross-textual reading, the emotional sorrow for growing old,for the loss of one’s past and for the mortality of human beings can all be expressed through the symbolism of the ruined garden, and our understanding of the biblical text enriched through Chinese tradition.
