摘　　要：在围绕着“南方性”的诸多讨论中,有一种观点认为南方人共同的价值观是构成“南方性”的核心所在。作为南方人共同价值观的一种表现形式,南方传统荣誉观在内战前把人们生活中迥异的方方面面联结在一起,同时维护了区域的共性、持续性及日益显著的独特性。然而,随着19世纪末工业化和城市化在美国南方的迅速发展,南方传统荣誉观不再是南方人所共有的荣誉观。在肖邦的小说《觉醒》中,不同人物由于阶级和性别的不同,对于荣誉的理解和看法也呈现出不同程度的差异。除了南方传统荣誉观以外,还包括以表现金钱力量为特征的中产阶级荣誉观和以看重内在维度的荣誉为特征的新女性荣誉观。因此.通过揭示新旧南方交替时期南方人荣誉观的流变,肖邦展现了她对于“南方性”被侵蚀的敏锐洞察力,同时也流露出她对于“南方性”变得日渐模糊的无奈。Among numerous discussions on“southernness,” one view holds that the shared values of southerners are the core of“southernness.”As one of the shared values,the traditional concept of honor connected disparate facets of southern life while asserting regional commonalities and continuities as well as growing distinctiveness.However,as industrialization and urbanization developed in the South in the late 19th century,the traditional concept of honor was no longer shared by all the southerners.In Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening,there were different concepts of honor among characters of different class and gender,including the traditional concept of honor held by the old southerners,the pecuniary concept of honor held by the middle class and the concept of honor held by the New Woman who valued the internal dimensions of honor.Therefore,by revealing the discontinuities of honor among southerners in the transitional period from the Old South to the New South,Chopin provided her keen insight into the erosion of“southernness,”and also expressed her helplessness in stopping“southernness”from becoming indistinguishable.
