In February 2011, Sichuan Province Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted a joint rescuing excavation with other institutions at Bajia Village Cemetery in Meiyu Town, Yanyuan County, due to a large-scale looting took place. A total of 20 shaft tombs from the Bronze Age were excavated, which were looted to different degrees. Bajia Village Cemetery was a small site as all burials discovered were small-sized tombs. Out of the 9 burials which were in a slightly better state of preservation, 5 were covered with stone slabs or discovered with stones at the top. Covering the top of shaft with large stone or slab is an important feature of the funeral custom in Yanyuan bronze culture. A certain number of pottery, bronze wares, iron wares, bronze-iron composites, turquoise, seashells etc. were unearthed at the cemetery, which are basically the same with the unearthed objects from Laolongtou Cemetery and collected cultural relics in Yanyuan over the years, belonging to the connotation of Yanyuan bronze culture. The most common type of pottery is the double-ear jar, which are mostly flat-bottomed, with a small amount of ring-footed ones. In terms of shape, the plate-like ears of the double-ear jars stretch from the mouth to the position of maximum diameter, along the outer contours of the lower body. Weapons make up the majority of bronze wares, including swords, spears, axes, arrow heads and ornaments, all small in size and poorly crafted, probably specially made for funerary purposes. However, tip ornaments of canes and twig-shaped ornaments which are common in collected cultural relics are not seen in Bajia Village Cemetery. There are few pieces of iron wares and iron-bronze composites, such as iron rings and iron spears with bronze sockets. Turquoise and seashells unearthed are small ornaments. According to the unearthed funerary objects, cultural features of the Bajia Village Cemetery are relatively coherent, and the age of the cemetery, we believe, is in the Western Han dynasty.
