This paper intends to make a critical cognitive analysis of COVID-19 news narratives from Chinese and American media Based on the mental spaces and conceptual blending, the paper identifies the linguistic strategies in Chinese and English news narratives and describes how these strategies invite readers to vicariously experience these events as mediate witnesses. The analysis shows as the follows.First,American news narratives use present tense in narrative space and remain source-viewpoints space at the end of each episode space resulting in the temporal compression between these spaces to impress the readers with the severe of COVID-19 while Chinese news narratives adopt past tense in narrative space and change to present tense at the end of each episode space to place the readers at a safe distance from COVID-19.Second,Chinese news narratives use Free Indirect Mode and many verbs of cognition and perception to blend the viewpoint of journalist, narrator and the source, resulting in ambiguous viewpoint which enables the readers to vicariously experience distant news events from up close,as mediated witnesses. In conclusion, different language techniques may be adopted to regulate the distance between mental spaces through space embedding and blending to achieve different report purpose.
