Margaret Atwood’s novel Alias Grace is a work of reflection on the truth of old historicism.Interpreting this novel with the concepts of"subversion"and"containment"of new historicism,we can see that in the dimension of interaction between history and text, the previous texts have played a role in Margaret Atwood’s portrayal of Grace’s image at certain degree of restraint, but Atwood deconstructed and reconstructed Grace’s image from the real historical situation of Grace being oppressed by both class and gender, thereby subverting the official history centered on patriarchy. In the novel,it is specifically manifested as the alternate conversion between madness and rationality in the image of Grace, which is affected by the combined force of patriarchal discourse suppression and subversion.
