How to reduce regional income disparities has long been the focus of geographers, economists and policymakers.Although polycentricity is regarded by planners as a panacea for narrowing regional income disparities, there are few empirical studies supporting this view so far.Based on Landscan population data and night lighting data for 132 countries around the world, using panel fixed-effects model and two-stage least squares method, this paper explores the effect of city size distribution on regional income disparities in a cross-country perspective. The study finds that polycentricity does not reduce regional income disparities, but rather leads to an increase in regional disparities.Monocentre reduces regional disparities mainly by promoting faster growth of per capita income in smaller cities than in larger ones. This is the spatial expression of non-balanced development, which shows that the economy will move towards equilibrium through agglomeration. In the future, restrictions on the movement of people in large cities should be relaxed to a reasonable extent to guide the rational distribution of urban size.
