Cadmium is a naturally produced heavy metal element, human activities and natural movement can also produce cadmium, resulting in cadmium pollution. In some areas of China, there were different degrees of cadmium pollution in soil, as well as some cadmium residue in crops and drinking water were found.Cadmium can cause multiple organs damage, especially liver, kidney and bone. Some scholars believe that the ‘Itai-itai disease’ caused by cadmium is also related to the nutritional status, especially vitamin D deficiency.Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, abnormal vitamin D metabolism and secondary calcium and phosphorus metabolic disorders can cause osteoporosis and osteomalacia, etc.Kidney, liver and bone are also the main sites of metabolism and action of vitamin D.This article would make a brief review on the interference role of cadmium in vitamin D metabolic pathways and the effect of Vitamin D deficiency or supplement on the toxic effects of cadmium, thereby, providing some theoretic basis for exploring the feasibility of vitamin D to prevent or alleviate liver, kidney, bone, and intestinal toxicity caused by cadmium.
