Innate immunity is the first line of host resistance to microbial invasion and a critical component of the immune system.Viperin is an innate immune-mediated protein with antiviral activity and induced by many factors such as interferons. It can suppress the replication of DNA viruses,RNA viruses and even some bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms by a variety of ways including regulation of cell metabolism, interferon expression and cell signaling.Viperin also plays a role as a regulator in thermogenesis, polarization of macrophages and secretion of cytokines. However, the specific antiviral mechanism of Viperin is not yet defined well since it is a kind of new signal molecule of innate immunity system. In recent years,Viperin protein has increasingly attracted many attentions and related studies with the development of molecular biology techniques. In this paper, several major aspects of Viperin, such as its structure, function, antiviral mechanism and regulatory role were systemically reviewed, providing a reference for the further research.
