On the basis of the interviews with local British acupuncturists, this paper reviews the acupuncture craze that occurred in British society in the second half of the 20th century. At that time, traditional Chinese medicine was introduced into the general population and then was recognized as an“alternative medicine”.The author attempts to show that the historical impetus behind this fever consists of not only political publicity, but also an important driving force, that is,the Counterculture Movement.Such cultural movement was prevalent in the British society among local youth groups in the 1970s and 80s.Dissatisfied with the universal model that had been firmly established by their parents’generation after the Second World War,and the defect and supremacy of the biomedical-dominated medical system, members of the Counterculture began to turn to the East for its“traditions”—the“Other”to the Western modernity—for wisdom and answers to then current social problems in Britain. In this process, they integrated theories from traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture with psychological knowledge and therapeutic tools that were then flourishing in the UK to develop a system of“Western-style Chinese acupuncture”for the health needs of the contemporary British society.
