There are various appraisal resources in political news report discourse. They can not only express intentions of the journalists, but also reflect certain power relations and ideology. In both of the two journals, affect resources are the least, while judgment resources are the most. Force resources are far more than focus resources in both of them as well. The differences are as follows. There are more appreciation, social esteem, and quantification resources in The Washington Post. The journalists use them to ensure the rationality of the reports and emphasize rule of law, which can further make reports authoritative and readers convinced. In The Guardian, however, affect, social sanction and intensification resources are applied more by the journalists to arouse readers’ empathy by showing feelings, which helps to indirectly convey supportive signals to America and strengthen the alliance between the two countries.
