摘　　要：《中国历险记》由13则惊险故事辑录而成,全部为柏格理进入中国西南尤其是跋涉于滇川黔边界多民族聚居区期间的涉险体验。叙述者采用“非时序”方式、“内聚焦”视角、倒插式结构及幽默等手法,再现了一系列出生入死的冒险经历,不仅彰显了柏格理为爱舍生忘死,而且藉讥讽之径,揭示了诸多当时依存于西南民众中的习焉不察的陈腐流弊与文化痼疾,试图在否定“他者”文化的同时实现“自我”肯定的目的。Tight Corners in China was published in London in 1908.It consists of 13 separated adventures experienced or witnessed by the British Methodist Samuel Pollard during his missionary career from 1888 to 1915 in Southwest China.Outwardly,this anthology exalts the heroism of Samuel Pollard who risked his life and limb for rescuing victims,but actually exposes and satirizes the cormpt customs,bad habits and cultural ills that are deeply rooted in the psychological consciousness and the daily life of modern inhabitants in Southwest China.Due to its non-chronological narrative pattern,internal focalization model,foreshadowing device,descriptive techniques,and imperial strategies such as negation and debasement,we may say that Tight Corners in China is a heroic epic that authentically symbolizes the author’s purposes of self-confirmation or something edifying.
