摘 要:批评家通常认为奈保尔的《抵达之谜》表达了对理想化的英国乡村的怀旧或者对白人文化的盲目认同,与后殖民批判事业背道而驰。本文认为小说表达了对撒切尔主义的乡村遗产话语和怀旧的后殖民批判。模仿英国乡村话语本质上是奈保尔揭露殖民主义认知暴力的一种策略。通过用历史化的凝视修正殖民教育强加的理想化凝视,《抵达之谜》挑战了遗产话语的文化权威。小说不仅解构了遗产工业兜售的"永恒的乡村英国"观念,而且通过还原英国庄园与殖民经济之间被遮蔽的历史关联,控诉了"遗产英国"在帝国主义暴力问题上的集体失忆。Previous readings of V.S.Naipaul’s The Enigma of Arrival frequently align it with nostalgia for an idealized English countryside or an unquestioning embrace of white culture,which betrays the enterprise of postcolonial critique.This paper argues instead that the novel performs a postcolonial critique of the Thatcherite discourse of rural heritage and nostalgia.Naipaul’s mimicry of English discourses is essentially a strategy of disclosing the epistemic violence of colonialism.By continually replacing the idealized gaze imposed by colonial education with a historicized one,the novel produces a counter-discourse that challenges the cultural authority of heritage discourse.It not only deconstructs the idea of a timeless rural England as advertised by the heritage industry,but also denounces,by uncovering the obscured historical connections between English country houses and colonial economy,the nostalgically-oriented heritage England for its collective amnesia about imperial violence.
