摘　　要：The chronological disorder plays a significant role in The Sound and The Fury, a marvelous classic stream-of-conscious-ness novel by William Faulkner. Through four distinct time narratives, the personality of each character is outlined: Benji’s inno-cence and simplicity, Quentin’s weakness, vulnerability and fragility, Jason’s stinginess, selfishness and sophistication, andDilsey’s love and courage. And the theme of the novel is also deepened. By interweaving fragments of time in the novel, Faulknerexpresses not only the agony towards the decline of Southern glorious culture, but more importantly, the loss of modern human’scourage, glory, honor, hope, pride, compassion, pity, and sacrifice. At the same time, Faulkner recalls these human virtues in thenovel.
