儒学关键词“礼”与严复译著《群学肄言》

摘  要:严复使用了关键词法,将儒学关键词“礼”多次穿插于《群学肄言》中。严复用“礼”对译与社会规范、礼仪道德以及艺术等有关的英文词汇或短语,且一般在需要讽刺或者直接批判封建社会制度时在译文中嵌入“礼”。严复用“礼”对译是有条件的,只有在谈及习俗法制或者需要以中释西及对比中西文化和思想时,且结合语境斟酌后他才会将相关词语译为“礼”。他对于“礼”的使用持谨慎态度,这种谨慎态度与其当时对儒学的半批判态度有关。Yan Fu uses the keyword method interspersing the Confucian keyword“Li”in Qun Xue Yi Yan many times.Yan Fu usually uses“Li”to translate English words or phrases related to social norms,etiquette and morality,or arts,and inserts“Li”in his translation when he needs to satirize or directly criticize the feudal social system.Yan Fu’s use of the word“Li”in his translation is conditional,which means that he translates the relevant words and phrases into“Li”after considering the context only when mentioning conventions and legal systems,or interpreting Western culture with Chinese culture and comparing Chinese and Western cultures and ideology.Yan Fu is cautious about the use of“Li”,and this attitude is related to his semi-critical attitude towards Confucianism at that special time.
