Paradise in the Sea of Sorrow:Our Minamata Disease is a masterpiece by Japanese writer Ridoko Ishimou.Minamata disease, one of the four public nuisance diseases in Japan,is the first disease in human history caused by the entrance of environmental pollutants into the food chain.Based on the true story, the book is an account of the disaster that the“strange disease”brought to Minamata and the local residents.More importantly, the writer is concerned with the socially vulnerable groups.By means of“Michikoben”(a writing style invented by herself),she expresses her feminist ideas, creates an ecological identity from a civilian perspective, and heightens the sense of agency of the Minamata Disease patients, thus voicing for the voiceless in this ecological disaster. This book is an important source of reference for our critique of Japan’s discharge of nuclear waste water into the sea.
