As a major international trading hub in China in the first half of the 20th century, the economic development of Shanghai was greatly influenced by the vagaries of the global economy and the changing political situation in the 1920s and 1930s.Meanwhile,Jewish merchants seized the opportunity of the changing political and economic environment to engage in the capital market in Shanghai and to enlarge their economic influence there.Through the case study of the real estate investment of the Jewish merchants in Shanghai,by focusing on the global political and economic crises of the period such as the fluctuation of silver prices, the Great Depression, the Silver Purchase Act of the United States and the Japanese invasion, this article examines how the global economic ups and downs affected Shanghai’s economic development in the 1920s and 1930s,and how the Jewish merchants seized this opportunity to expand their economic influence among the Shanghai’s foreign business society and to become one of the crucial sources of foreign capital in different fields in the Shanghai economy.
