摘  要:This article discusses how to read surrounding words and phrases for determining word meaning through using contextual analysis.When students have the problems in dealing with unknown words,they can use contextual analysis to guess or determine the meaning of a word.The use of context-based method to recognize the meaning of a new word has its rationale:research on context,Schema theory essentially,top-down and bottom-up,and cognitive theory,and there are seven assumptions underlying the discussion of a context-based approach to acquiring vocabulary.The article lists comprehensive types of context clues that can help a reader infer the meaning of a new word,and also guides how to apply them.There are some advantages of using this approach.Students should apply a context-based approach and recognize the signal words and practice inferring the meaning of an unknown word in short context.The research methods of this paper are the ones of assumptions,experience and literature review and analysis.The conclusion of this paper is the understanding of different types of context clues and its role is to give comprehensive types of context clues to help students to guess word meanings when they encounter new words in reading.
