Objective To analyze the results of MRI scan of the whole spine of fighter pilots during physical examination for modified aircraft and to provide reference for aviation health support. Methods The MRI data on the spines of 134 fighter pilots who underwent physical examination for modified aircraft in Air Force Special Medical Center between May 2020 and January 2021 were randomly selected. These patients were grouped according to flight time and age for statistical analysis. Results The incidence of abnormal cervical curvature and cervical disc herniations or bulges was significantly different between groups with different flight time(P<0.05). The incidence of abnormal cervical curvature was the highest among pilots whose flight time was less than 999 h, while the incidence of cervical disc herniations or bulges increased with the extension of flight time(P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of abnormal cervical curvature or herniations of cervical, thoracic and lumbar discs between different age groups, but the incidence tended to increase with age(P>0.05). The difference in the incidence of abnormal cervical curvature and cervical disc herniations or bulges was not statistically significant(P>0.05). Conclusion Flight time can increase the vulnerability of fighter pilots to cervical disc herniations or bulges, and the incidence increases with flight time. However, age has no significant effect on the incidence of abnormal spinal curvature or disc herniations or bulges.
