Objective:To investigate the impact of implicit theories on people’s mental health(anxiety and depression) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods:A total of 942 adults(18 years old or above)across the country were invited to participate in this study, and finished the lay theories of health scale, measure of health protection behaviors and prosocial behaviors,Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale(GAD-7),Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-9),and demographic information survey(including gender, age, occupation, education, income, residence etc.).Results:(1)Implicit theories of health were negatively correlated with anxiety and depression.(2)Health protection behavior participation partially mediated the predictive effect of implicit theories of health on depression, but not on anxiety.(3)Engagement in prosocial behaviors moderated the effect of implicit theories of health on depression, but not on anxiety. Conclusion:People’s implicit theories of health predict the level of depressive symptoms through engagement in health protection behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic.Engagement in pro-social behaviors moderated this effect.
