重拾现代性:与史蒂文·夏平再谈《利维坦与空气泵》

摘　　要：1985年,史蒂文·夏平和西蒙·沙弗合著的《利维坦与空气泵》出版,至今已有三十五年之久。该书对于STS而言,有着极为重大的学术意义,更能勾连起一段学术史。本文结合本文作者近期与夏平教授的学术通信,基于学术界对这本书之学术定位的传统讨论,以"现代性"为指向,对拓展对该书的阅读可能性和研究价值提出了新的看法。本文认为,从《利维坦与空气泵》围绕"霍布斯-玻意耳争论"所呈现的历史出发,该书的现代性意义值得进一步开发,而这将突破一直以来STS对该书的习惯性阅读,也是发扬STS跨学科特色并增强其学术生命力的一种尝试。In 1985,almost 35 years ago,Leviathan and the Air-Pump:Hobbes,Boyle and the Experimental Life authored by Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer was published.The book has shown great value and it has now become one of the classics in science,technology and society(STS).Furthermore,as a tie,it can also link to the history of a special school in STS.Based on my recent academic communications with Professor Shapin,and the traditional discussions on the academic position of this book in the academic circle,this paper puts forward some new views on expanding the reading possibility and research value of this book by focusing on its“modernity”.This paper holds that,starting from the history of Leviathan and the Air-Pump around the Hobbes-Boyle Controversy,the modernity of this book is worth further development,which will break through the habitual reading of this book in the STS,and it will also be an attempt to carry forward the interdisciplinary advantages of the STS and enhance its academic vitality.
