As one of China?s oldest and unique entertainment means with a complete system, drama is a splendid treasure of Chinese traditional culture, with distinctive national characteristics and unique aesthetic taste. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the anti-Japanese base areas opened by the CPC in Shanxi were all located in the hinterland of the countryside, with strong closed traditions and poor economic conditions. There was no other ways of entertainment to adjust their boring lives. As a traditional extension, watching drama became one of the few entertainments of the local people. Public entertainment is also one of the basic needs of people?s life. This kind of rural drama culture accumulated over a long period of time has a subtle influence on the way of thinking and behavior of the people, and it also maintains the social emotions of the village. During the Anti-Japanese War, the CPC was the first to realize that drama played a major role in the realization of its political ideas and the governance of the entire rural society. As Bernard Shaw said, “The theater is a place of propaganda.” After the CPC mastered and fully utilized the effective propaganda characteristics of drama, the art form of drama became the propaganda weapon of the CPC during the Anti-Japanese War. From 1937 to 1945, the “drama movement” was in full swing in the Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Base in Shanxi. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, drama propaganda has become one of the basic methods of revolutionary mobilization for the people in the base areas. It has achieved great success in social governance, wartime mobilization, ideological enlightenment and policy implementation. It still has a reference role today and is worth inheriting and enlightening.
