摘　　要：本文认为,约翰·福尔斯在《法国中尉的女人》中赋予了萨拉斯芬克斯母神的神话原型,而将查尔斯塑造为一位并"不真正理解达尔文"的达尔文主义者,无法理解萨拉在"神秘法则"驱使下做出的"神秘选择",所呼应的背景乃是达尔文从天择演化论到性择演化论的思想转变。小说中,萨拉离开男性,选择与同性友人抚养孩子,操演了母系社会中的原始养育文明。因此,小说通过表现原始文化记忆在现代个体身上的遗存,刻画了原始文化与现代文化之间的冲突与矛盾。The essay demonstrates that John Fowles created Sarah Woodruff,the protagonist in The French Lieutenant’s Woman,according to the mythological archetype of mother goddess of Sphinx.While that Charles Smithson was depicted as a Darwinist who“had not really understood Darwin”,and was confused about Sarah’s“mysterious choice”driven by“mysterious laws”,corresponds to the historical background of Charles Darwin’s turn from the idea of natural selection to that of sexual selection,that Sarah left her male partner and chose to raise her child with her female friend actually performs the breeding mode in primitive matriarchal society.Therefore,through the depiction of the survival of primitive cultural memory in a modern individual,the novel represents the conflicts and differences between the primitive and modern culture.
