The identification of nasal codas in Mandarin has been a challenge for Japanese speakers. In this study,we applied High Variability Phonetic Training(HVPT)to a training software to help Japanese speakers to identify nasal codas in a non-laboratory environment.A group of participants with Mandarin learning experience and a group without Mandarin learning experience were subjected to perceptual training for nine weeks. The research findings are three-fold.First,participants with Mandarin learning experience have significantly improved their perceptual ability through training, and the training effect, which retains for four months after the training, has been transferred to novel speakers, novel stimuli, and novel phonetic environments.Participants without learning experience have made no improvement in their perceptual ability after the training.Second, the two groups show no bias towards“-n”or“-ng”.Third,individual differences make up an important factor influencing the efficiency of perceptual training. These findings may shed new light on the improvement of Japanese speakers’perceptual ability of Chinese nasal codas and the construction of the perceptual training paradigm.
