Ningen no Hitsuji, through the violent events on a bus going to the periphery, describes two worlds in a confrontation of value systems:the United States, which is the victorious country representing the central value system, and Japan, which is the defeated country symbolizing the peripheral value system. The former aims to depict how the colonizers,US military, carried out physical discipline and even spiritual control over the colonized, the Japanese nationals by physical violence, making them obedient subjects like sheep, and finally realizing political power control;the latter focuses on highlighting the dereliction of duty of the police department,a symbol of state power, and criticizing the loss of patriarchal responsibility headed by the emperor. That is to say,the novel reveals how the violence of American hegemonism overlaps with the awakening consciousness and unyielding resistance of a few Japanese people, and builds a new model of "periphery resists center" and explores Japan’s way out of hopelessness.
