The writer of the marginal glosses of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner(1817) has long been held as an imaginary and ironized editor, totally different from the poet. This essay focuses on a few key glosses and argues that the purported writer is strikingly similar to Coleridge in their preference for antiquarian books, equal emphasis on reason and empathy, as well as their unperturbed subscription to Platonism and Christianity. An investigation into the verse text and Coleridge’s life experiences before 1817 reveals the lonely and depressed poet’s striking resemblance to and hidden affinity for the penitent protagonist. Coleridge wrote the glosses to make the poem more intelligible, while unwittingly, betraying his tormented soul not unlike that of the ancient mariner.
