As a card to convey personal information to the host family,a“name card”was an important starting point for examining the ethos of officialdom in the mid and late Ming Dynasty. On the one hand,a set of“name card etiquette”formed around“name cards”was a norm for communication and etiquette generally observed by the entire ruling class. On the other hand, the material, shape, title, signature, writing content of“name cards”and the etiquette of“presenting name cards”directly embodied the etiquette system and the hierarchy of superiority and inferiority. The dramatic changes of“name cards”during a period of time reflected the change in the ethos of officialdom from simplicity to frivolity, which served as an important testimony to the unpredictable rise and fall of the decency of officials.
