摘　　要：美国作家萨拉·朱厄特的短篇小说《外乡人》具有浓郁的哥特风格。一方面,它继承了哥特传统,采用“故事中的故事”的叙述角度以及时空倒错的顺序,通过场景、情节和超自然元素等营造了心理恐怖氛围。另一方面它又突破了哥特小说中惯用白人女性作为女主角的传统,以一个懂巫术的、黑白混血的克里奥尔女子为故事主人公,带有明显的美国本土特征。这可视为她在哥特小说创作上的一种新尝试。American writer Sarah Jewett’s short story“The Foreigner”has a strong Gothic style.On the one hand,it inherits the Gothic tradition,using the narrative angle of“story within story”and the sequence of the inversion of time and space to create psychological horror through setting,plot and supernatural elements.On the other hand,it breaks through the tradition of using white female as the heroine in Gothic novels,and takes a black and white Creole woman who knows witchcraft as the protagonist,with obvious native American characteristics.This can be regarded as her new attempt in the creation of Gothic novels.
