摘 要:作为20世纪第一本系统记录中国女子教育嬗变的著作,美国传教士伯顿于1911年出版的《中国女子教育》一书记录了晚清教会女学与中国自办女学的发展历程,囊括了国人难以观察到的诸多细节。此外该作从西方视域总结了女子教育带来的社会风俗变迁、职业女性造就、女子参政议政3方面的进步意义,不乏真知灼见。但是我们应注意到,这样的认识与思考存有偏颇。因此,突破西方视域,以更加全面、客观的视角,廓清晚清中国女子教育崛起的复杂历程及其发展壮大的多重缘由,再现中国晚清女子教育中西交替发展的真实图景,便显得极为重要。The Education of Women in China(1911)written by the missionary,Margaret E Burton,is the first English book to systematically study on the development,features and significance of Chinese women's education in the late Qing Dynasty,which includes many details unnoticed by Chinese.Apart from detailed explanation and in-depth discussion on the mission schools for women and self-run schools for women,the writer gives some comparatively wrong ideas and misunderstandings at the same time,but few Chinese scholars have ever paid great attention to and correct them.Hence,it is of vital importance to clarify and distinguish the pros and cons of two types of schools for women,each's different achievements in China and multiple factors of promoting the development of women's education at that time to interpret the Chinese women's education in a more comprehensive and objective way.
