The depletion of oxygen brings a series of environmental problems such as eutrophication, black and odorous in water. Here a kind of a low-cost oxygen slow-releasing compound(OSRC)was prepared by mixing with CaO2,Na-bentonite,river sand and cement, and monitored for characterizing its effects on removal in the overlying wa‐ter as well as P fractions and microbial enzyme activity in the sediment. The results showed that OSRC was effective in releasing oxygen over a period of time. The contents of TP reduced in the overlying water after OSRC amendment. The main composition of inorganic P in the sediment changed from available P(NaOH-P)to unavailable P(HCl-P),in‐dicating OSRC treatment was favorable in controlling the release of P from the sediment. Moreover,OSRC amendment improved microbial activity of dehydrogenase, urease and protease in the sediment. These findings suggest that the OS‐RC formulation has the ability to be a steady oxygen providing source which may potentially lead to new solutions within the problem of eutrophication in the water.
