摘　　要：盖斯凯尔夫人是维多利亚时期杰出的女性作家之一,她的小说以反映资产阶级与工人阶级之间的劳资冲突而著称。本文就盖斯凯尔夫人以工人阶级的生活和斗争为题材的两部作品《玛丽·巴顿》和《南方与北方》进行写作内容上的详实分析和比较,从中管窥盖斯凯尔夫人对工业革命所持有的较为中肯的态度,认为她既肯定了工业文明给社会带来的进步与财富,又能对当时历史条件下的资本主义制度进行有力批判。Mrs Gaskell is one of the outstanding female writers of Victorian period.Her novels are famous for reflecting the labor conflict between the bourgeoisie and the working class.This paper makes a detailed analysis and comparison of the two works,Mary Barton and North and South,which depict the life and struggle of the working class.The paper concludes that the industrial attitude held by Elizabeth Gaskell is quite pertinent.She not only affirmed that industrial civilization had brought progress and wealth to the society,but also criticized the capitalist system under the historical conditions.
