Tomb No.2158 at the Hengshui cemetery in Jiangxian,Shanxi is the tomb of a vassal of the Peng state from the reign of King Mu of the Western Zhou.Unearthed, inscribed bronze ritual vessels such as the “Rui Bo Zuo Wang Zi” vessels, the “Rui Bo Zuo Peng Ji Ying” gui tureen, the “Lu Hou” ding tripod, and “Tai Bo” li tripod are primary sources for developing a thorough understanding of marital institutions during the Western Zhou. This study suggests that the marriage ceremony was usually hosted by a vassal who shared a surname with the Zhou king when the king married off female relatives. The ceremony was hosted by Earl Rui when the elder sister of King Mu was married,as indicated by inscribed bronze vessels commissioned by Earl Rui for the king’s elder sister.Meanwhile,Lady Peng, the daughter of Earl Rui,also married into the state of Peng as the niece or sister of the king’s elder sister, likewise evidenced by the “Rui Bo Zuo Peng Ji Ying” gui tureen. Moreover, the Western Zhou marital institution allowed for a system by which women were provided by other state(s) when the vassal of one state married off a female relative,as evidenced by the “Tai Bo” li tripod and “Lu Hou” ding tripod.
