International Sports Events Facilitate Inbound Tourism Growth

摘  要:我国举办各类大型体育比赛的数量逐年上升,测算国际性体育赛事的旅游促进效应具有现实意义。文章首先阐明了举办赛事→完善设施、扩大宣传和提升效率→促进入境旅游这样一条影响路径。随后利用1995—2017年175个国家或地区的数据,实证检验了国际性赛事对东道主旅游业的动态影响及其机制。结果表明:(1)以足球为代表的国际性体育赛事会扩大东道主国家或地区入境旅游规模并刺激旅游消费;(2)此效应不仅局限于球迷游客,也存在于普通游客之中;(3)除了足球为代表的团体项目外,网球为代表的个人项目也具有该效应。此研究既为体育旅游领域的研究提供了不同赛事类型视角,又探讨了比赛、旅游、基建、媒体与政府间的关系,还为我国政府的赛事申办决策和旅游业的发展方向提供了参考。With the increase in the variety and frequency of mega international sports events held in China every year, it is imperative to further the understanding of how such events can facilitate the inbound tourism growth in host countries/areas. Therefore, this paper conducts a comprehensive empirical study by utilizing a long panel that consists of information on 13 359 soccer matches and3892 tennis matches and tourism data in 175 countries/areas from 1995 to 2017. The aim is to examine the dynamic effects of hosting sporting contests on tourist arrivals and expenditures in host countries/areas and then continue to explore the relative importance of potential underlying mechanisms.We figure out four regularities. First, hosting international soccer competitions significantly increases the number of inbound tourists and stimulates the amount of tourism consumption in host countries/areas. Second, the identified effects are not limited to tourists who are sports fans but also spill over into general-purpose tourists. Third, international tennis events could lead to a similar boosting impact even after controlling for the characteristics of contemporaneous soccer matches.Fourth, the results derived from a mediating effect model confirm that infrastructure, media coverage, and administrative efficiency play equally important roles as the functionary channel through which major sporting events promote tourism development. From a theoretical point of view, the facilitative effects operate both directly and indirectly. Concerning the direct impact, on one hand, the exciting competitions and intense games will attract a large crowd of spectators, and the purchase of tickets,accommodation, and related souvenirs constitute the main forms of their spending. On the other hand,the strong feelings induced by the events can reinforce the positive public image of the host along with fresh shopping experiences.
