From 1901 to 1945,the Japanese established nearly a hundred libraries in China. The early libraries founded by Japanese expatriates,to a large extent, were set up as a“symbol of civilization”to meet their own spiritual and learning needs. With the expansion of Japanese influence in China, the military and political authorities tried to use the library as a“tool”to strengthen the cultural control in the occupied areas, and the role of the Japanese library in China as a tool for the export of civilization was highlighted. Before and after World War II,due to the continuous intervention of Japanese military and political departments and the introduction of various jurisdictional policies,Japanese libraries in China shouldered a special“cultural mission”and became a sharp weapon of Japanese colonial cultural aggression against China. The evolution of the social function of Japanese libraries in China is not only a symbol of the expansion of modern Japanese culture, but also reflects the abnormal development of Japanese libraries in wartime.
