Metaphors of translation are of great significance in facilitating human understanding of translation, translating and translation studies as well. A diachronic and comparative study of the Chinese metaphor of translation“daizhe liaokao tiaowu”and its English counterpart“dancing(on ropes)with fettered legs”shows that they,as metaphors of translation, though similar in appearance, are rather different in connotative meaning and in use,and in order to better the practice of such metaphors of translation,a new categorization is developed based upon the different connotative meanings of metaphors of translation along with comparative analyses concerned.
