Cross-Strait academia has long attached great importance to the exploration and study of the connotation of “Taiwan identity”,and there have been various interpretative systems such as monism, pluralism, andcomplexism. As a kind of exclusive identity,“Taiwan identity” is a composite concept which is dynamic and develops in the course of history. This determines that “Taiwan identity” is closely related to the process of historical development. In the long process of historical change,“Taiwan identity” has gradually evolved into five main types:“Taiwan Residents identity”,“lifestyle identity”,“values identity”,and “Taiwan homeland identity”,and “political system identity”.These five types of identities emerged from different periods and were brought about by certain historical events, thus serving as distinctive historical nodes.Through the analysis of historical institutionalism, this article attempts to reconstruct the comprehensive meaning of “Taiwan identity” and takes the characteristics of the historical development of “Taiwan identity” as a departure point to explore effective ways to eliminate this exclusive identity.
