摘　　要：民族主义是社会学的重要分支理论,民族主义学家本尼迪克特·安德森总结了北美产生的民族主义,认为民族主义的产生源自殖民母国对欧裔移民晋升空间的限制,他取名该现象为“世俗朝圣”。翁达杰的小说《英国病人》中的人物基普符合世俗朝圣的理论,同时翁达杰探讨了极端功利主义所造成的恶劣后果,展示出学者型作家对民族主义的全面理解。Nationalism is an important branch theory of sociology.The nationalist Benedict summed up the nationalism produced in North America.He believed that the emergence of nationalism originated from the restriction of the colonial mother country on the promotion space of European immigrants.He named this phenomenon“Secular Pilgrimage”.The character Kip in Ontaatje’s novel English Patient conforms to the theory of secular pilgrimage.At the same time,Ontaatje discusses the bad consequences caused by extreme utilitarianism,showing the scholar-type writer's comprehensive understanding of nationalism.
