中美大学生英语议论文写作中立场动词对比研究——以中北大学和德州农工大学为例

摘  要:本文借鉴D.Biber的立场标记语范式和分类,自建两个小型语料库,对中北大学和美国德州农工大学英语专业学生议论文写作中的立场动词进行实证对比研究。研究结果表明:1)总体来看,中北大学学生使用立场动词的总数量要多于德州农工大学学生,说明他们有立场意识。同时,两校学生在使用立场动词时差异显著。其次,在不同类型的立场动词中,两校学生都过度依赖情态动词和立场动词引导的从句,使用简单动词和动词短语较少。2)具体来说,在情态或半情态动词中,中北大学学生过多使用can,will,should,很少使用must,would;在简单动词中,think,know,feel更多地被使用,而support,mean,seem几乎不被使用,多样性较低;在动词短语中,德州农工大学学生使用的总体数量要多,在使用动词+介词的结构上两者没有显著差异,动词+副词的使用上存在显著差异;that-从句的使用上没有显著差异,to-从句方面存在显著差异。3)调查问卷的结果表明,学生对立场动词知识掌握不足、学生对议论文写作的态度成为影响中北大学英语专业学生使用立场动词不均衡的因素。以期本研究对中国学生英语写作教学提供启示。With two small-scale self-built corpora,a comparative study of stance verbs in English argumentative writings of students from the North University of China(NUC)and the Texas A&M University(TAMU)is conducted by adopting D.Biber’s stance markers paradigm and classification.It is found(a)The number of stance verbs used by the NUC students is more than those used by the students at the TAMU,which shows that the NUC students have developed their stance awareness,and there are significant differences in the use of stance verbs between the students of these two universities.In terms of the categories of stance verbs,the students at both universities highly rely upon modal verbs,the subordinate clauses started by stance verbs and rarely use simple verbs and verb phrases.(b)The students at NUC have excessively used modal or semi-modal verbs such as can,will and should and rarely used must and would.For simple verbs,they often use think,know and feel and have almost never used support and mean.The number of verb phrases used by students at TAMU is more than those used by the students at NUC.There are no significant differences in the use of the verb+preposition structure,while there are significant differences in the use of the verb+adverb structure between these two universities.There are no significant differences in the use of that-clauses,and there are significant differences in the use of to-clauses.The results of the questionnaire show that a lack of solid knowledge and the negative attitudes of the students at NUC restrict them from evenly using stance verbs.This article hopes to provide enlightenments for Chinese students to improve their English writing.
